D&W overwintert in de Bekercompetitie

Op zaterdag 13 december mocht D&W Koekelare aantreden in de voorronde van de bekercompetitie. Tegenstander van dienst, KBC Maldegem-Donk kwam hun titelambities verdedigen op de Koekelaarse terreinen.

Maldegem was een niet te onderschatten ploeg want zij staan in het provinciale klassement op de 2e plaats. De ploeg heeft duidelijk ambitie om te promoveren en beschikt ongetwijfeld over het nodige talent. De heren uit het Meetjesland kregen bij de start van deze voorrondewedstrijd een voorgift van 6 punten omdat D&W over een ploeg beschikt in 3e Nationale.

De bekerploeg van D&W bestond enkel uit spelers die aantreden in 3e Nationale. Bjorn Flameyn, Giovanni Vermet, Toon Sys, Michiel Roose, Janne Seynaeve, Gerdi Ledeine en Kris Bryon mochten de Koekelaarse kleuren verdedigen.

De wedstrijd werd gestart na een kwartier vertraging. De heren van D&W schoten up-tempo uit de startblokken en konden na een tiental minuten vier punten inhalen op de voorgift. Vooral Giovanni kwam sterk opzetten en scoorde regelmatig op een tweede worp.

De Koekelaarse verdediging (toch vaak de Achilleshiel van 3e Nationale) vond snel een antwoord op het aanvallend geweld van Maldegem. De lange verre worpen waarvan Maldegem zich bedient in provinciale, werden keer op keer onderschept waardoor zij hun sterkste aanvallende troef verloren.

Koekelare etaleerde verdedigend met enkele knappe reddingen van o.a Toon, Michiel en Kris en mocht daarna gaan rusten met 11-11 op het scorebord.

In de tweede helft werden Toon en Kris vervangen door Bjorn en Janne. Bjorn kon op volle kracht starten en liet de Maldegemse spelers alle kanten van het terrein zien. In de verdediging liet Janne zich gelden met enkele knappe doorgetipte ballen, die Michiel daarna vlot kon vangen.

In het slotkwartier werd Giovanni vervangen door Gerdi. Gerdi is gekend omwille van zijn verre rugworpen en dat mocht Maldegem al snel merken.

De wedstrijd werd afgefloten met een eindscore van 29-19. De prestaties van deze bekerploeg geven alvast hoop om opnieuw een finaleplaats van de bekercompetitie te behalen.
